Why Participate?
Quitting smoking is difficult. The average smoker will try to quit several times before they are able to successfully stop smoking. However, extensive research has shown that there are effective and well tolerated treatments for smoking cessation. This study offers free nicotine relacement therapy (NRT) as well as weekly phone therapy in order to help you be successful with quitting.
Nicotine Patches. You will receive 8 weeks of free nicotine transdermal patches as part of a step-down treatment plan (21mg for the first four weeks, 14mg for the next two weeks, and 7mg for the final two weeks).
Weekly Phone Therapy. You will receive free weekly phone therapy from a clinical psychology Ph.D. student. Counseling will entail techniques that have been scientifically proven to enhance quitting success. Specifically, the clinician will discuss with you ways to reduce cravings and lapses, manage smoking-related cues/triggers, manage stress, and prevent weight gain.
Feedback of Laboratory Results. At the completion of the study, you will receive a free medical report displaying your cardiovascular and sexual functioning.
Financial Compensation. At the completion of the study, you will be compensated in cash for your time.
